Advent Wreath Candle

Posted by Santa Clause - February 25th, 2011

This is a German tradition that has become popular all over the world – an advent wreath is so much more attractive than any wreath you can buy and it has a wonderful fresh pine/cedar smell! The word “Advent” comes from the Latin “adventus”, which means “arrival” and various traditions attach a variety of meanings to the Advent Wreath.

Generally speaking, the circle of the evergreens is symbolic of Christ’s never-ending love and forgiveness, while the four red candles, lit successively on each of the 4 Sundays of Advent (the four weeks before Christmas), represent hope or expectation, peace, love and joy.

Christmas Candles

Posted by Santa Clause - January 25th, 2011

Christmas without candles would just not feel like Christmas at all!

Many cultures still light real candles on their Christmas trees and even those that opt for electric Christmas lights, use candles for additional decoration. Candles on the tree are usually either red or white (not mixed!) and gold candles also come into play elsewhere.

Picture Game on Christmas

Posted by christmas - December 10th, 2010

My favorite Christmas game is the picture game. It is a game that has pictures and you have to figure what song the pictures are describing.

For example there would be a picture of a L with a line through it, and the answer would be Noel as the song Noel.

You get as many copies as you like and pass them out to party guest. I was introduced to this game when I was 15 from a teacher.

Play Post Office on Christmas

Posted by christmas - December 8th, 2010

We always played Post Office. I still have fond memories of the game.

It has no real rules, and I think it was designed by my parents mostly for chaos control with a horde of excited children.

Each of us in turn got to be PostMaster, while everyone waited in a circle at their assigned “addresses” (like, at the desk, sitting on the sofa, etc.).

The PostMaster would select a gift from under the tree, read the tag silently to him/herself, and then “deliver” it with fanfare and name announced to the recipient. Read More »

My favorite game is “Chris Parent Chris Child”.

It is a game of making the Chris child find out who his or her Chris parent is and do the tasks assigned by the parent.

The tasks can be amusing and it can make the game quite hilarious.

This game is played for a few days till Christmas Eve when the suspense is broken to the child by announcing who the parent is.

After declaring himself or herself as the parent, the Chris parent gives the Chris Child a gift as well. Read More »

Traditional Christmas Game: Find the Christmas Pickle

Posted by christmas - December 5th, 2010

My family has a traditional Christmas game called “Find the Christmas Pickle.”

I’m not sure where or how this game originated (it’s most likely European but I’m not positive) but it plays like this: the host or hostess of the Christmas party clears the room of all potential participants.

Then he or she hides the Christmas pickle (it can be of any size or material but it should be green) in the Christmas tree.

Once the pickle is hidden, the host or hostess calls the players back in to the room and the search for the Christmas pickle begins. Read More »
