Christmas decoration ideas from growing child to mom with kids

Posted by christmas - September 23rd, 2008

When I was a little kid, I asked my mom to buy a cross stitch kit of a Christmas stocking. She told me that if I finish it by Christmas, she’ll pay for it, but otherwise, I will need to pay for it. Well, I finished it and hang it up every year.

Years have gone by, and I’ve made a stocking for every person that is now part of my family. My husband has one, and I’m in the process of finishing one for my daughter.

They’re all different pictures but made with love. Besides this, I always do up the tree. Someday, I’ll make a tree skirt for the tree, but have not gotten around to that yet. But the ornaments are all special to me to.

Since I was little, my mom would give my sister and I a special ornament every single year…with plans that when we move out and start our own families, we could take them with us and not be stuck with plain balls. I have a salt snowflake from Utah, a Hershey mouse with a candy bar from Hershey Park, PA, the nutcracker set, a bride a groom the year we got married, and other special ornaments.

I started this with my daughter and husband too. And besides this, my sister and I have a tradition of going to the Short Hills mall the day after Christmas and picking up pretty ornaments that are on sale.

It’s more about spending time together, but I’ve gotten pretty silver garland from Crate and Barrel that covers the tree as well as tons of ornaments from them.

Each year, I probably spend about $15-20 on these things the day after Christmas and about $40 before to decorate the house. We always display the Christmas cards that we get around the house (at my mom’s we’d hang them on the doors).

Besides Crate and Barrel, most of the things that I buy are from Target or Walmart. I try to get things that look to be of good quality but aren’t too expensive. I’ll also go to a local place to get a real wreath.
