In Mexico the Christmas celebration starts nine days before the 24th (Holy Night or Noche Buena). On each of the nine days leading up to the Holy Night there are Posadas (enactment’s of Joseph and Virgin Mary looking for their lodging), held at different homes around the neighborhood.
The hosts of the Posadas are considered the innkeepers, with the adults and neighborhood children being the Los Peregrinos, requesting lodging through the singing of a chant. Piñatas are used at the celebrations including children.
The Mexican christmas is different from other Christmas traditions around the world as the presents are not received on Christmas, because this is the day to celebrate the life of the Savior.
