Christmas tree decorating theme with German glass

Posted by christmas - April 19th, 2008

My Christmas tree decorating theme was originally all white. I collect snowmen and have been given many snowmen ornaments over the years. I was even given two strands of lights shaped like snowmen!

I also had a large collection of hand crocheted snowflakes I bought at a crafts fair about ten years ago. Chandelier replacement part websites yielded crystal drops which I hang from the tips of the branches to catch the light.

Only recently have I begun adding in other colors but this are all in the theme of hand blown German glass and German glass glitter. I hunt through antique shops looking for German glass and was also lucky enough to inherit my mother’s few remaining ornaments.

The glass glitter ornaments are all in crystalline silver which allows my tree to maintain its white appearance; however, the hand blown ornaments are in color.

My three favorite are all a pear green color with gold scrolling. They are just enough of a color variation to stand out from the color of my tree but don’t disrupt the white theme. I was given two ornaments last year that are of a very rich red – almost a blood red – with silver ornamental scrolling.

As these are the only two pops of color on my tree it has made me desire to collect more German glass in other colors.

I am a traditionalist and use only Christmas themed ornaments such as snowmen, snowflakes, reindeer, doves, balls, etc.

I don’t like the non-traditional themes such as flamingos, shells or fish; nor do I like any of the comical ornaments which in no way relate to the holiday. I also do not use Santa ornaments as I try to keep the commercialism to a minimum so my family understands what Christmas is about.

I do not use plastic ornaments as they just aren’t as beautiful as hand blown glass. Yes I spend more on my decorations but they are special to me and I actually love the fragility of them.

I typically will spend up towards $12 for one antique ornament but craft fairs will offer hand made ornaments very inexpensively. I bought two dozen snowflakes one year for only ten dollars!
