Family Christmas decoration tradition

Posted by christmas - September 21st, 2003

Christmas is my favorite time of year and we not only decorate our tree but put decorations in every room of our home. I began a tradition when each of my children was born and for each Christmas my husband and I would purchase a special x-mas ornament for each child.

Each year the girls were into something new. Our youngest was involved in sports and music so we tried to buy an ornament that she would put up every year and it would remind her of that time in her life.

Our oldest was more a book worm and interested in fashion so we purchased those types of ornaments. Our goal in beginning of this tradition was to have a collection of ornaments for each girl to take when she had her own place to decorate.

My husband and I play golf and I worked at a Napa Valley Winery so the girls began purchasing the both of us those types of ornaments.

In the 1990′s I began collecting key chains from cities, states, countries that I visited or friends/family visited and brought to me. This year I will putting up a small to medium tree decorated with small lights and use my key chains as ornaments. Some of the key chains I have are from China, England, France, Belgium, and many of the U.S. States (Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, DC, Chicago, Memphis, Nevada, California, Louisiana). I’ve also collected from various concerts (Mariah Carey, Jersey Boys, Celine Dion, Cher and Rolling Stones).

We give ornaments as gifts and each year it is a challenge to shop for just the right ornament for each person. Each year my husband and I purchase one ornament for us that is special and someday pass on to our children when they have homes of their own. We don’t have a budget, each year we make a day of it and when we find what we both like we make the purchase.

Share your Christmas experience, we are impatient to read it :-)
