Home Christmas Decoration

Christmas decoration is a family duty that all of us enjoy. Christmas is one of my family’s favorite holidays. Time for gift giving, songs, and reflection. The decorative process has always been a big event for us, and it’s a tradition to get together, one and all, and do our part to make our home as beautiful as ever.

We go to pick out our Christmas tree on a farm, and try to pick the biggest, widest, most beautiful smelling tree there is! We like to go get our tree a week or so after Thanksgiving, to ensure that we have a good pick of all the trees.

When we bring our tree home, the men in our family set it up, and clip off any pieces that may be awkward. During this time, the girls in the family are picking out Christmas CD’s, and playing them. We love to decorate to holiday favorites like, “Winter Wonderland”, “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas”, “O’ Holy Night”, and more.

Once the tree is in the stand, and watered, we begin our Christmas decorating. We have boxes brought down from the attic with ornaments that have been passed down from generation to generation, and we also have newer ones that we’ve bought along the years.

We use colored Christmas lights and candy canes, because they are fun for the kids. We do not use garland to wrap around the tree, or strung popcorn because we have pets that could get into it.

Once the tree is decorated, we set off to decorate the house. We have red and green candles, with gold stands, cute standing characters for tabletops (elves, snowmen, Santas), and we hang our stockings over the fireplace. The stockings were made by my Grandmother, so they really are very special to us.

On the doors, we set out our Christmas wreaths, freshly purchased from the local farm, smelling of cinnamon and spruce. We set out colorful, decorative bowls of Christmas candies, like Hershey’s kisses, starlight mints, and more, so that our guests can help themselves to a treat.

Another favorite pastime during the Christmas decoration is cookie making. We make batches and batches of Christmas cookies, and use sprinkled sugars, frosting and whatever we can find to decorate them.

These are also great gifts to give to neighbors, mailmen, and baby-sitters.

Christmas is really a time of togetherness for our family. It’s a tradition that will be continued for many years to come. We look forward to this special time as a family, each and every Christmas season.
