I use a combination of traditional and modern Christmas decorations

I love to decorating the house for Christmas. I love the season, and decorating the house really puts me in the holiday spirit. I use a combination of traditional and modern Christmas decorations.

I love to use pretty green pine garlands on the banister. I have several decorations that I take out and put on surfaces all over the house, such as a contemporary metal Santa and tree.

I have sparkly stars that I like to drape around objects on the walls or underneath the mantle – I vary it each year. I bring out a beautiful crystal bowl that I use once a year for just this purpose: I get fancy glass ornaments and put 3-4 in the bowl, which I use it as a centerpiece on our dining room table. It looks very pretty.

I place the Christmas cards on shelves all over the house; they themselves are decorations. I get the stockings and hang them, each with someone’s name on them. We hang an indoor wreath made of fake red berries on the wall and hang a red bell wreath on the front door.

I also hang a cool wrought iron Christmas tree on the outside of our house. The piece de resistance, of course, is the Christmas tree. This is a fun family outing for all of us. We pick out a real tree, bring it home, and set it up.

My husband puts the colored lights on the tree. We decorate it with various ornaments, some sentimental, some homemade. This makes it truly ours. We always let one of the kids put the angel on top of the tree. We also place red and green garlands on the tree. It looks very festive, and we keep the lights on almost all the time throughout the season.

We use an old white sheet to wrap around the bottom of the tree, then cover that in presents. It really looks beautiful. The whole family loves decorating the tree together while listening to Christmas music. If egg nog or hot chocolate are in the mix somewhere, all the better!!

We’ll be using lots of decorations and ornaments given by generous Freecyclers this year, as we lost a lot of stuff to a flood last year. This was a shame, but I look forward to using these decorations that are new to us. It will be a surprise! We spend almost nothing on decorating (due to Freecycle and Craigslist).

Brands include Target and Macy’s and some independent brands. Some are homemade; these are the most special. I love the sentimental decorations the most. Some were gifts. Thanks to generous Freecyclers who will help make decorating possible for us this year. And thanks to my family who always makes holiday decorating special.

Share your Christmas experience, we are impatient to read it :-)
