Lyrics Christmas song Away In a Manger

Posted by christmas - November 23rd, 2008

My favorite Christmas song is Away In a Manger. The version I like the best from the many many remakes of it is John Denver’s version. This song reminds me of my father. Being very into music, and Christmas being his favorite holiday, my father has a large selection of Christmas music.

They are all usually very well known songs but versions from artists that aren’t as main stream. My father played it for me for the first time when I was little; maybe eight or nine. I fell in love with it instantly.

The simplicity of the song impressed me with the fact that there weren’t a lot of sleigh bells and still had such a beautiful melody. The words sounded like something a child would sing before bedtime and although I am no longer a religious person I still find myself humming this song at twenty-three years old.

When I was ten my school produced a Christmas Variety show. Everyone had to do something whether it was an act or being a stage hand. I really wanted to sing but I am terribly shy and didn’t know if I had the courage to sing in front of an entire auditorium of people.

I chose this song as it was the one Christmas song I knew the best and spent the next week rehearsing and cringing a little. When the time came for me to perform it, I did so without fault…not saying that I sang it perfectly because I probably had a few flat notes…just meaning that I didn’t mess up.

My palms were sweating and I was terrified but I got through it. So not only does this song remind me of snowy Christmas mornings with my father, but it also reminds me of the first time I faced my fears and had the courage to perform.

In case anyone is not familiar with the lyrics to the song they are as follows…

Lyrics Christmas song Away In a Manger

Away in a manger, no crib for his bed
The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head
The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay
The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,
But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.
I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky
And stay by my cradle till morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever, and love me, I pray.
Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,
And take us to heaven, to live with Thee there.

My favorite Christmas song is “Away in a manger” I heard this song for the first time on a Christmas tape that my mother played yearly. I also heard it at several different church Christmas plays.

They seemed to always play it in the inn when Mary first had Jesus and had him in the manger. It is a beautiful song that is full of meaning and it blesses my heart every time I hear it.

Share your Christmas experience, we are impatient to read it :-)
