Lyrics of Old Fashioned Tree carol

Posted by christmas - October 27th, 2008

I have 2 favorite Christmas songs. One is ‘I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day’ which a lot of people know but my other favorite is ‘Old Fashioned Tree’. This one seems to stump everyone.

I always thought that it was the flip side of Gene Autry’s ‘Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer’ record done way back, I guess, in the early 1940s. Whenever it was made, it was always the one that I wanted played as a little girl and to this day I still know all the words.

It’s a good thing that I do because I can’t find it anywhere so I hope what I remember is actually correct. It always reminds me of home and how my family would all take time to decorate the tree together.

Dad took hours to trim it just so and mom would sit in the living room having him turn it to all angles until it was where she thought it looked the prettiest and then he would tie up any sagging branches and trim the bottom so it would fit in the container.

The ornaments were put on with the smallest on the top and the largest on the bottom. Everyone had their favorites that they would put on and the ones that we made in school.

Under the tree was the Nativity set and what a grand production that was! We had stuff from 3 or 4 sets as they would break and so careful choices had to be made to include figures that did not overwhelm any others.

Having so many sets gave us all kinds of animals to choose from and the parade of chicks and ducks and horses and cows and sheep and camels was staggering!

Here are lyrics of Old Fashioned Tree:

Every year it’s just an Old Fashioned Tree
Trimmed with tinsel that shone in candle light.
In the window where neighbors all could see,
How we kept our Christmas merry and bright.
I loved the evening we’d trim the tree and then
We’d all sing carols and pledge good will toward men.
Every year it’s just an Old Fashioned Tree,
That brings all the joy of Christmas to me.
